Government

The New York colony was ruled by the Dutch. In 1685 the King and Queen of England took power over the royal colony being ruled by a monarchy. The colony had a governor who was responsible for the colonies concerns. At the time the duke ruled he was allowed to do what he pleased with his colony. When King James took the colony the laws were similar to the British laws. In 1683 the first assembly members were voted into the lower house of legislature. From there on the Governor would be the only one to rule such as a dictator. Although colonist could vote only males who were land owners were allowed to do so. People who were not land owners didn't have as many rights as those who did.
